AI is in ‘First Inning’ and Our Funding Has Doubled: Verizon CEO

By Yahoo Finance – 2025 Goldman Sachs Communacopia and Technology Conference Coverage

At the 2025 Goldman Sachs Communacopia and Technology Conference, Verizon Communications (NYSE: VZ) CEO Hans Vestberg delivered a compelling vision for how artificial intelligence is shaping the future of telecommunications. Vestberg discussed with Yahoo Finance executive editor Brian Sozzi the expansion of Verizon’s AI initiatives, highlighting a doubling of AI investment over the past year and describing the company as being in the “first inning” of its AI journey.

From strategic mergers and acquisitions to breakthroughs in fiber-optic infrastructure and wireless innovation, Verizon is positioning itself at the vanguard of tech-driven transformation within a highly competitive landscape.

Doubling Down on Artificial Intelligence

Hans Vestberg emphasized that Verizon views artificial intelligence as a transformative force across every facet of its business. “We’re only in the beginning,” Vestberg explained. “Our funding for AI initiatives has more than doubled as we focus on enhancing customer experience, driving operational efficiency, and unlocking new revenue streams.”

Recent industry data reflects the accelerating adoption of AI in telecommunications. According to IDC, global telco AI spending is projected to reach $5.7 billion in 2025, growing at a double-digit compound annual rate. Verizon’s investment aligns with this trend and aims to position the company ahead of major sector disruptions.

Applications range from AI-powered network optimization and predictive maintenance to customer service chatbots and seamless digital onboarding. Vestberg noted that investments in generative AI tools are already reducing operating costs and improving service reliability, particularly in critical areas such as 5G deployments and network troubleshooting.

Wireless and Fiber: Cornerstones of Verizon’s Growth

The core of Verizon’s business remains its expansive wireless network and cutting-edge fiber infrastructure. Vestberg reported steady subscriber growth and robust demand for high-speed data, fueled by ongoing 5G and Fios rollouts.

“Our continued leadership in wireless and fiber is foundational. But it’s the integration of AI that supercharges our ability to innovate — from automating network management to enabling smarter, faster connections for both consumers and enterprises,” Vestberg explained. In 2024, Verizon passed more than 20 million homes with Fios, expanding its market presence across several key metropolitan areas.

With the U.S. wireless market exceeding $250 billion in annual revenues and fiber broadband penetration accelerating, Verizon is capitalizing on both trends. Nearly 90% of new Verizon customers are now managed through AI-assisted digital channels, underscoring the shift toward intelligent, customer-centric service models.

M&A and the Convergence of Media, Tech, and Telecom

The interview also addressed consolidation and strategic partnerships in telecom and media. “We’re always looking at opportunities, but there has to be the right fit,” said Vestberg. “AI helps us evaluate not just traditional M&A, but non-traditional partnerships across streaming, digital media, and cloud computing.”

Analysts note that the deal environment remains robust: in 2024, global M&A activity in telecommunications topped $250 billion as companies pursue scale and scope in digital media and content delivery. Verizon’s previous forays, including the divestment of Yahoo and AOL, have refocused the business on connectivity and enterprise solutions, but Vestberg signaled interest in future deals that could accelerate innovation and subscriber growth.

AI and the Future of Connectivity

AI is also reshaping how telecom companies address security threats, digital privacy, and regulatory requirements. Vestberg acknowledged, “The regulatory environment is evolving, and we’re working closely with U.S. and international policymakers to ensure responsible use of AI. Trust and transparency are non-negotiable.”

Verizon’s AI roadmap includes investments in cybersecurity, fraud prevention, and next-generation customer privacy tools. In June 2025, Verizon announced its AI Transparency Initiative, dedicating $100 million over three years to advances in explainable AI, scalable network security, and digital ethics frameworks.

The company also reported collaborations with startups and academia. Partnerships with MIT and Carnegie Mellon are driving AI research in quantum networking and bandwidth optimization, with pilots set to launch later this year.

Competitive Landscape and Outlook

The competitive intensity in the telecommunications sector is heightening as rivals like AT&T, T-Mobile, and Comcast similarly ramp up AI capabilities and invest billions in next-generation network technologies. Vestberg sees Verizon’s early bet on AI as a differentiator:

“We’re building AI into the DNA of our company — not as a side project, but as the engine behind every innovation.”

Market analysts at Morgan Stanley forecast that first-movers in AI could realize up to a 15% bump in EBITDA margins by 2027 due to cost reductions and new digital services. Investors appear confident: Verizon’s stock rose 12% in the first half of 2025, significantly outperforming the S&P Telecommunication Index (+7% year-to-date).

As the AI “first inning” gives way to new breakthroughs in cloud computing, automation, and digital media, Verizon stands poised to remain a leading player at the intersection of connectivity and intelligence.
