Alibaba’s $100M Investment Propels X Square Robot Toward Embodied AI Leadership and Global Expansion

By Paula Tudoran — September 14, 2025

In a major move that underscores the intensifying global race for leadership in advanced robotics, Shenzhen-based X Square Robot has announced a $100 million funding round led by Alibaba Group Holding. The fresh capital brings the company’s total funding to approximately $280 million since its 2023 launch, and marks a significant milestone for both embodied artificial intelligence (AI) and the Chinese robotics sector.

Alibaba’s investment, spearheaded via Alibaba Cloud, is joined by heavyweight backers including HongShan (formerly Sequoia Capital China), Meituan, Legend Star, Legend Capital, and INCE Capital. This strong show of investor confidence reflects the sector’s enormous potential as AI and robotics blend to reshape the future workforce and daily life.

The Global Embodied AI Arms Race

Venture capital interest in humanoid robotics has soared, driven by breakthroughs in large language models and generative AI. Industry giants and nimble startups alike are racing to commercialize embodied AI—capable of integrating perception, reasoning, and real-world action—to build machines that can interact naturally with their environments and with humans.

X Square Robot has rapidly become a showcase of this trend, completing eight funding rounds in under two years. As COO Yang Qian explained in a CNBC interview, growing demand is fueled by the need for robots that can carry out complex and nuanced tasks autonomously. Whereas earlier robots excelled only at repetitive or simple manual tasks, today’s ambition is for AI-powered machines to understand, adapt to, and work within unstructured human environments.

“Robots have for decades been a symbol of the future, but their abilities were limited by hardware and narrow programming,” Yang said. “With generative AI and deep learning, we’re entering an era where robots can reason, perceive, and interact much more like humans.”

Innovation at the Forefront: WALL-OSS and Quanta X2

On September 8, X Square Robot unveiled WALL-OSS, its pioneering foundation model for end-to-end embodied learning. Shared openly on GitHub and Hugging Face, WALL-OSS enables robots to align vision, language, and action for manipulation and interaction tasks, taking research from the lab into the physical world.

This technical leap coincided with the introduction of the Quanta X2 humanoid robot. Boasting 360-degree cleaning with swapable mop heads and advanced dexterous hands equipped to sense subtle pressure shifts, Quanta X2 is being piloted in diverse real-world settings such as schools, hotels, and senior living facilities. These deployments not only generate revenue, but also offer critical user feedback for improvement.

However, advanced robotics capabilities come at a cost; the current Quanta X2 is priced around $80,000 according to industry tracker Humanoid Guide. For comparison, competitors like China’s Unitree are promoting humanoid models as low as $16,000, though their true abilities may lag behind. X Square Robot notes that mass-market affordability remains a key challenge.

Pathway to Mass Market Adoption

X Square Robot’s leadership is frank about current limitations. “Widespread home adoption is still some years away,” Yang acknowledges, estimating that prices need to fall below $10,000 for robots to become accessible to average consumers. The company aims to achieve this milestone within three to five years, primarily through cutting-edge hardware design, supply chain optimization, and efficiency gains as manufacturing scales up.

Industry consensus aligns with Yang’s forecast. According to a 2025 report by MarketsandMarkets, the global service robotics market is projected to reach $73.0 billion by 2030, growing at a CAGR of 22.6% from 2024. Consumer demand is expected to surge as AI-powered robots become valuable assistants not just in industry, but in homes, clinics, and public venues.

Yang is bullish about the prospects: “We expect robotic butlers to be a reality within this decade—capable of cleaning, delivering, and assisting in dynamic, unpredictable environments.”

IPO Ambitions and International Growth

Flush with new funding, X Square Robot is carefully planning its next phase—an initial public offering is targeted as early as next year, though the company has yet to finalize the listing venue. This development signals the maturity of China’s AI-powered robotics startups and their intention to compete on a global stage, not just domestically.

The company is already expanding internationally, holding talks with potential clients in Japan, Singapore, and other high-tech markets where labor shortages and aging demographics create strong demand for robotics solutions. This aligns with broader trends, as both Asia and North America see increasing investment in robotics for healthcare, hospitality, and logistics.

Moreover, X Square Robot is diversifying its supply chain. While Nvidia GPUs power its data-intensive AI functions, some autonomy-related systems rely on automotive-grade chips that can be sourced domestically within China. This hybrid approach provides resilience amid ongoing global semiconductor uncertainties and trade tensions.

Industry Challenges and The Road Ahead

Despite the excitement, significant barriers remain. Yang notes that AI for robotics still lags behind the capabilities demonstrated by chatbots and code generators. She estimates embodied AI will require at least another year to achieve the equivalent sophistication of language models like ChatGPT 3.5, and acknowledges the absence of industry-standard benchmarks for robotic intelligence.

Nonetheless, sector momentum is unmistakable. Global tech majors including Tesla (with its Optimus robot), Boston Dynamics, and Figure AI are all in fierce competition with ambitious Chinese players for the coveted title of “the world’s first truly useful humanoid.” The next five years are expected to define the winners in this transformative sector.

The Bottom Line

Alibaba’s $100M investment into X Square Robot marks more than just a cash infusion—it’s an endorsement of embodied AI as the next technological frontier. With rapid technical iterations, deep-pocketed backers, and a clear vision for scalable commercial deployment, X Square Robot is positioned to play a pivotal role in turning humans’ long-held science-fiction dreams of robotic helpers into everyday reality.

As the company advances toward IPO and mass production, industry watchers are keeping a close eye on Shenzhen, poised to see if X Square Robot’s quest for affordable, intelligent, and versatile humanoid machines can meet the world’s soaring expectations.
