Amazon, one of the world’s largest employers and tech giants, is undergoing a paradigm shift driven by artificial intelligence—a change that CEO Andy Jassy believes will simultaneously eliminate and create jobs. In a candid June 2025 interview with CNBC, Jassy labelled AI as “the most transformative technology in our lifetime,” making it clear that the company’s 1.5 million-strong global workforce will experience sweeping changes.

AI-Driven Transformation: Disruption and Opportunity

“With every technical transformation, there will be fewer people doing some of the jobs that the technology actually starts to automate,” Jassy explained. While this means certain positions—particularly those involving repetitive or routine tasks—will gradually disappear, he emphasized the surge in demand for highly skilled employees in new areas. “We’re going to hire more people in AI and more people in robotics, and there are going to be other jobs that the technology will require, which we’ll hire over time too.”

Data from Amazon’s public job postings supports this assertion: over 500 open positions including the keyword “robotics” have been listed worldwide in the past month alone. These roles span internships, robotics engineers, and senior applied scientists working on machine-learning infrastructure, robotic perception, and motion systems—the very backbone of Amazon’s next-generation logistics and delivery platforms.

AI’s Impact Across the Workforce

AI’s reach will not be limited to the technical ranks. Jassy noted that AI agents will increasingly handle tasks like coding, research, analytics, and spreadsheet work—a trend that will change the nature of jobs for employees in every Amazon office, distribution center, and fulfillment hub. “People won’t have to do as much rote work. Every single person gets to start every task at a more advanced starting spot,” he said, hinting at the kind of workplace augmentation that’s rapidly spreading across industries.

Amazon has ramped up deployment of internal AI tools, such as advanced data analytics platforms and machine vision for warehouses, as part of a major investment push. In April, the company announced a $4 billion investment in Anthropic, an AI startup, reflecting Amazon’s commitment to integrating AI throughout its operations.

Employee Concerns Amidst Uncertainty

Jassy’s recent memo to staff, which outlined the company’s accelerated use of AI, has sparked mixed reactions internally. While it emphasized long-term upskilling opportunities and efficiency, some Amazon employees expressed dismay over the anticipated workforce reductions. Comments on internal Slack channels reflected this anxiety, with staff interpreting the announcement as a prelude to further layoffs.

Amazon has already cut nearly 28,000 jobs since the beginning of 2022, amid a wave of tech industry downsizing following pandemic-era overhiring. The company maintains that roles most impacted by AI automation are likely to be corporate, professional, and entry-level white-collar jobs, echoing warnings from other tech sector leaders.

Tech Industry’s Broader Reckoning with AI

Jassy is not alone in forecasting structural workforce change. In recent months, executives from across Silicon Valley have sounded alarms about AI-driven displacement. Micha Kaufman, CEO of the freelance platform Fiverr, warned staff in April 2025, “It does not matter if you are a programmer, designer, project manager, data scientist, lawyer, customer support rep, salesperson, or a finance person—AI is coming for you.” Similarly, Dario Amodei, CEO of AI research company Anthropic, suggested that as many as half of all entry-level white-collar jobs could be at risk of automation in the foreseeable future.

This sentiment is backed by fresh research. According to a 2024 study by Goldman Sachs, generative AI could affect up to 300 million full-time jobs globally. Roles involving routine data processing, basic analysis, or predictable physical tasks are the most vulnerable, while jobs that require high-level creativity, emotional intelligence, or specialized technical skills are poised to grow.

Amazon’s AI Strategy: Adaptation and Training

In anticipation of these disruptions, Amazon is doubling down on initiatives to train and upskill its workforce. The company’s longstanding “Upskilling 2025” program offers employees paths into cloud computing, data science, AI, and robotics. In 2024, Amazon pledged more than $1.2 billion for employee retraining aimed at keeping the workforce resilient and ready for the jobs of the future.

Jassy has positioned Amazon as a leader in workforce transformation, arguing that “the best way to respond to technological change is to help existing employees move up the value chain.” He insists that, although the short-term pain of job losses is inevitable, long-term competitiveness and innovation demand constant adaptation.

The Future of Work at Amazon—and Beyond

While the exact number of jobs to be lost or created remains uncertain, the direction is clear: AI will be central not only to Amazon’s internal operations but to its vision of reshaping commerce, logistics, and technology itself. Industry analysts predict that new opportunities in AI engineering, robotics maintenance, human-AI collaboration, and digital logistics will grow in the coming decade, even as traditional administrative and support roles wane.

For Amazon employees, the coming years will require flexibility, an appetite for continuous learning, and a willingness to embrace evolving technology. As companies like Amazon, Google, and Microsoft compete to lead the AI revolution, the shape of tomorrow’s workforce will depend on how quickly businesses—and workers themselves—adapt to the new status quo.
