Recent reports revealed that xAI prompted all employees to install Hubstaff, a productivity monitoring software, on their personal computers, even if they do not use company-issued devices. According to a memo first reported by Business Insider, xAI notified its staff in early July 2025 that Hubstaff installation would be required to “streamline work processes, provide clearer insights into daily tutoring activities, and ensure resources align with Human Data priorities.” Employees were given a tight deadline to comply, placing immediate pressure on teams amid the rapid scaling of the Grok project.
Hubstaff’s installation tracks URLs visited, applications used, keystroke and mouse activity, and regularly captures screenshots — all during work hours as verified by clock-in and clock-out records. xAI management directed that no monitoring would occur outside of these periods.
