Growing Doubts Amid Ambitious Plans

Tesla, once the trailblazer of the electric vehicle (EV) revolution, is encountering a significant roadblock: growing consumer mistrust and indifference toward its flagship Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology. A recent survey conducted by Slingshot Strategies and covered in multiple outlets reveals that only 14% of American consumers are drawn to Tesla because of FSD, while a larger share—35%—actively avoid the brand due to apprehensions around its semi-autonomous capabilities. The remaining 51% say the technology does not influence their purchasing decision at all.

Even more concerning for CEO Elon Musk is that nearly half of survey respondents believe that FSD technology “should be illegal.” This deep-seated suspicion is compounded by another challenge Musk highlighted during Tesla’s second-quarter 2025 earnings call: “The vast majority of people don’t know [FSD] exists… It’s still like half of Tesla owners who could use it, haven’t tried it even once.”

A Year of Challenges for Tesla

Tesla’s struggle to convert FSD into a universally desired feature comes during a turbulent year for the brand. The company reported a dramatic 71% slump in net income for Q1 2025, per CNBC. The pain persisted into Q2, with earnings dropping further to $1.17 billion, down from $1.4 billion in the same quarter of 2024. Shares have grown volatile as investors question Tesla’s path forward, especially amid aggressive expansion into artificial intelligence and autonomy while core vehicle sales growth slows.

Musk’s high-profile involvement in politics—formerly serving in the U.S. government before returning full-time to Tesla—may have also strained the company’s public image, further muddying messaging around FSD and AI innovation.

Why FSD Skepticism Matters

The emergence of major consumer reluctance around FSD is a pivotal issue for Tesla’s future. While competitors steadily build out their own assisted driving capabilities and EV lines (including Ford’s BlueCruise, GM’s Super Cruise, and new entries from Honda, Toyota, and Volkswagen), Tesla’s distinctive bet is on delivering fully autonomous vehicles—a promise that remains unfulfilled, as FSD still requires active driver supervision and has yet to achieve true Level 4 or 5 autonomy.

If consumers feel alienated or fearful of the very technology Tesla is banking on to drive its next phase of growth, the risk isn’t just to feature adoption—it’s to Tesla’s entire brand proposition. Notably, lingering doubts over FSD come on top of broader consumer concerns about EVs in general. Separate industry research (from sources like AAA and Pew Research Center) continues to show that cost, range anxiety, and charging infrastructure remain top obstacles to wider EV adoption, with FSD skepticism now adding another layer of hesitancy.

EV Market Trends and Environmental Impact

Despite these headwinds, the global EV market is gaining gradual traction. Fully electric vehicles made up over 7% of new vehicle sales in the U.S. in the first half of 2025—a record high, according to BloombergNEF. Worldwide, EV sales are set to surpass 16 million units in 2025, up from under 10 million in 2023.

Switching to EVs offers compelling personal and societal benefits. Recent data from the U.S. Department of Energy suggests American EV owners save on average $1,500 annually in fuel and maintenance compared to combustion vehicles. In California, research by UC Berkeley measured a 1.8% annual drop in toxic gas emissions as EV adoption increased across monitored regions. Policymakers continue to incentivize EV uptake through tax credits, infrastructure investments, and stricter clean-air regulations.

Tesla’s Response and Competitive Landscape

To counteract the lack of FSD awareness, Tesla has announced new consumer education measures. These include in-depth video demonstrations for customers and direct outreach during vehicle service visits to explain and encourage the use of FSD. Despite challenges, Tesla remains a technological leader in the EV sector, but it’s increasingly facing fierce competition. New models, such as the Volkswagen ID.4, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai IONIQ 5, and Toyota bZ4X, provide consumers with more options than ever before—and often tout simpler, less controversial assisted-driving features.

Tesla’s recent moves include substantial price reductions on popular models, expansion of its supercharger network to non-Tesla EVs, and continued software updates for existing vehicles, all designed to defend its market share and reinforce customer loyalty.
However, for Tesla to regain lost momentum and recapture its aura of innovation, it will need to not only address technical challenges but also rebuild consumer trust in its autonomy vision. Ongoing regulatory scrutiny, such as recent investigations by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and European authorities into driver-assistance accidents, only heightens the urgency for clear, credible progress.

Looking Ahead

Tesla’s journey from icon to incumbent has never followed a simple road. Today it finds itself at a crossroads, where delivering on the promise of true autonomy could cement its lead—or where consumer wariness could unleash a wave of defections to hungry competitors. For Elon Musk and his executive team, the task is as much about evolving technology as it is about winning over the hearts and minds of a skeptical public.
As the EV age accelerates, only time will tell whether Tesla’s bold gamble on autonomy can overcome its current obstacles and revive both its reputation and its bottom line.
