Resurgence of a Classic Rivalry

After years of incremental change and Apple’s dominance in the U.S. market, new shipment and sales figures tell a story of mounting competition. According to Canalys, Samsung’s share of U.S. smartphone shipments jumped from 23% to 31% in the second quarter of 2025—a remarkable rebound—while Apple’s share dipped from 56% to 49% over the same period.

While Apple remains market leader by both sales and brand prestige, the data point to a more turbulent competitive landscape than seen in recent years. Durability was once the Achilles’ heel for foldables. However, improved engineering—highlighted by widely shared user durability tests and positive reviews—has begun to shift public perception. One viral video showing a Z Fold 7 surviving over 200,000 folds amassed more than 15 million views on YouTube, further cementing consumer confidence in Samsung’s technological advances.

The impact on the social media stage is equally telling. According to analytics firm Sprout Social, Samsung’s high-end devices generated more than 50,000 mentions on major platforms within a month of launch, with over 83% of those posts being positive or neutral. A groundswell of online excitement has translated into robust preorder numbers: Samsung claims the Z Fold 7 outperformed its predecessor’s launch by nearly 50%, with preorders up 25%.

Shifting Consumer Preferences and Market Drivers

Samsung’s resurgence is not solely based on high-tech innovation or form factor creativity. The breadth of its product portfolio is unmatched: devices span from affordable entry-level models to premium offerings that eclipse the price of any iPhone. This strategy enables Samsung to connect with a broader segment of consumers, especially as inflation impacts discretionary spending and as carriers promote discounts or incentives for switching brands.

Analyst Runar Bjorhovde of Canalys observes, “Samsung’s device range stretches from $650 up to $2,400. That’s a massive span. The company can target consumers at every price point, meeting the market wherever it is.” In contrast, Apple’s core lineup remains focused on a handful of models, with prices ranging from $829 to $1,599, and its physical design—a rectangular touchscreen—has seen minor evolution since 2017.

Tariffs, regulatory changes, and shifting global supply chains have also affected shipment patterns in 2025. Some analysts attribute double-digit market share swings to corporate efforts at minimizing tariff impacts, although consumer-driven demand for new designs and more personalized technology experiences remains undeniably influential.

Apple Prepares Its Next Move as Foldables Go Mainstream

Despite current market volatility, Apple is reportedly preparing to respond in kind. Industry observers expect a major iPhone refresh: a slimmer model potentially launching next month—rumored to be just 5.5mm thick, making it the thinnest iPhone ever—and, more notably, a foldable iPhone in 2026. JPMorgan analyst Samik Chatterjee predicts production of a foldable iPhone (possibly as the iPhone 18) to help Apple reclaim innovation leadership and offer new premium tier pricing, potentially starting at $1,999.

Historically, Apple has taken a “fast follower” approach, waiting for new technologies like 5G or wireless charging to mature before embracing them in its own breakthroughs. Regarding folding devices, this strategy appears to be in effect again—ensuring the category is ready for mass adoption before launching a competitor to Samsung’s Z Fold and Z Flip series.

AI and the Next Wave of Mobile Innovation

The competitive context for Apple and Samsung is not only hardware, but also software—especially artificial intelligence. Samsung’s Galaxy lineup, along with other Android flagships, now benefits from Google’s Gemini AI model, which boasts features like advanced image recognition, context-aware operations, and the ability to seamlessly multitask with large, flexible displays. Market Outlook: A Transforming Landscape

Despite its current challenges, Apple reported an impressive 13% jump in iPhone sales year over year for its July earnings, showing sustained demand even as the market evolves. For Samsung, the rewards of risk-taking are evident: by betting early and big on foldables, the company is benefiting from both innovation halo effect and consumer excitement.

As the global smartphone market pushes toward maturity, with shipments stagnating or declining in other developed regions, the U.S. battleground will likely dictate the next generation of mobile innovation. With AI propelling new possibilities and foldable form factors crossing the threshold into everyday appeal, consumers and investors alike are watching closely to see which tech giant will define the era ahead.
